2015 RUN...

SULTAN 50K is a birthday run (all jan birthdays) on the trails. So don't worry about your pace, your splits, your PR, your heart rate, or any of that jazz. Its a birthday party on the trails. It is in that spirit we continue this tradition for the 7th year.

Distance: 33 miles
Elevation Gain: 6,200 feet
Date: 1.25.2014 Start Time: 10am
Start/Finish: Roper Hollow Rd.
Turn Around (midway): Jacob Fork River Gorge parking area (2pm cutt-off)
Mandatory Gear: Crown

Course: Start/Finish will be at the Roper Hollow Rd. at 10:00am. The course is an out and back with a small lolly pop waterfall loop option at the turnaround. There's about 6200' elevation gain (dont underestimate South Mountains), the 16 mile cut-off time will be 4 hours. The route will not be marked. We may put up streamer tape (volunteers needed here). The course outside the park is straightforward and will be explained in the pre-run briefing.

Support: Remember this is a gathering of friends, low-key aid will be provided at the 16 mile turnaround at the Jacob Fork River Gorge parking area inside South Mountains State Park. Birthday cake (usually red velvet) consumption is mandatory on this run. Folks who are not running can celebrate with a nice waterfall hike. The first year we ran this, the entire waterfall was frozen. So make sure you bring warm cloths!

Event Format All runners are going to start no later than 10:00am. Please do not show up more than 20 minutes before 10am as some have gone too far on Roper Hollow road not knowing exactly where the starting point is. We will have an official meeting point at the Subway (1255 Burkemont Ave Ste A, Morganton, NC 28655) off of exit 103, according to google maps, on Hwy 40 at 8:40am. Map. This will allow anyone to grab breakfast here, down a few calories, caffine, liquids, re-shuffle any necessary gear, converse, and meet up with other peeps. If your not interested in breakfast, or want to sleep in another hour, or your just plain anti-social, we plan to depart from the Subway at 9:20am and be at the start, Roper Hollow Rd, by 9:45am. Run starts at 10am sharp. This year we hope to time the run and provide a 16 mile split, and a 32 mile finish time (recruiting volunteers). There will be bonus/boner minutes added and deducted from your actual time based on the following criteria:

Bonus/Boner Minutes Acquiring the first will result in faster “official” finish times; acquiring the latter will result in slower “official” finish times. (1) Bonus Minutes can be acquired by… (a) Wearing your Sultan crown the entire distance. Taking off the crown will result in boner minutes. (b) Eating a full slice of birthday cake. (c) Being extra nice to our volunteers. (d) Doing a headstand or cartwheel at least once while on the run. (e) Bonus Minutes can be increased based on level/value of participation. (2) Boner Minutes can be earned across several opportunities, prime among them not paying attention to / responding in a timely manner to e-mails from the Sultan or other officially-designated Sultan 50k Cohorts (when such e-mails ask for your input); whining because your Sultan 50k experience isn’t the perfection you’d anticipated; making life difficult for any one volunteer; or generally just being a pain in the tush (that term open to many interpretations). So, f’r'instance, earn 60 minutes of Boner Minutes, and your 6:38 finish time quickly reverts to over 7.5 hours of slogging towards the Finish… (3) Each volunteer will have Bonus and Boner Minutes to dispense at will, with only marginal limits on how many get awarded. If you can suck up to that many volunteers, just ponder how sweet it would be to see an “official” time that scores better than some of the fastest 50k’s out there. How you later relate the story of how you earned your reward is your business. And as the saying goes, “it’s YOUR log book, you can write anything you want in it…” (4) Bonus/Boner Minutes are not negotiable, tho the B/B Bogeyman will certainly enjoy the entertainment of your argument. Aid Station (SMSP Parking Lot – Mile 16.5) There will be one aid station at the main parking lot of South Mountains State park. Red velvet birthday deliciousness, and a special sultonic juice will be served, . Some type of carbonated and non-carbonated fluids will be available. If you would like to bring anything else along for the aid station, please do so! The aid station will open after our volunteers finish a nice waterfall hike, sometime in the afternoon and close after the last runner comes thru. If you are planning to run the entire 32 miles it would be encouraged to reach this aid station and be out of there no later than 2pm. If this is you, bring a headlamp.external image DIn8Ji.gif
