2011 Year's Tanawha Trail Updates

Tanawha Trail through meadows with Calloway Peak in the background

1st Annual Tanawha Trail Run from Brandon Thrower on Vimeo.

The Tanawha Trail is an almost completely runnable (but extremely technical) 13.5 mile section of the MST that parallels the Parkway. For a complete description of the trail look here:

All runs will start at the Price Lake Amphitheater parking lot between milepost 296-297 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This will be a self-supported run other than two aid drops (water only) at Boone Fork Parking Area (6, 20/26) and Beacon Heights (13.5/20). After the runs, there will be good times, good eats, and good brews at Canyon's Restaurant with a great view of the mountain we just tackled earlier in the day!

Half Course: Run from Price Lake to Beacon Heights one way. We will try to have a car shuttle for everyone back to Price Lake. Elevation gain = approx. 3,000 ft!!!

Marathon Course: Run from Price Lake to Beacon Heights and back. Elevation gain = approx. 5,000 ft!!!!!!

50K course: Elevation gain = approx. 7,000 ft.!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAAAATTTT!!!!!!
1st: Start at Price Lake and run till you intersect the Daniel Boone Scout Trail around mile 5.5 to 6. Run up to the top of Calloway Peak (top of Grandfather Mtn) and then back down to the Tanawha Trail and continue on the Marathon Course.
Warning!!! The last mile climb to Calloway Peak includes ladders, ropes, and a bit of exposure. It is guaranteed to be icy this time of year so bring a form of traction system along or you risk serious injury!!!!

Tentative Schedule of Events:
Marathon, Half & 50k: 8 am sharp (be in the parking lot by 7:45 for debriefing)
Food: 5:30 pm - whenever you need to leave (hopefully you'll stay for a good while)

Weather: Be prepared for anything weather wise. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worse! Last year's running the weather was near perfect but the first year was during a blizzard and obviously the run was cut short. Just 3-4 days earlier the trail was nearly completely cleared of snow and temperatures were in the mid to upper 50's!
