The BMM route w/ highlighted reliable water sources
What: A 26+-mile rugged trail traverse of the Black Mountains. 8,000ft+ gain
When: Saturday, October 8th, 2016
Who: Adequately prepared self-sufficient adventure runners (limit 10)
Where: Starting from Bowlens Cr. TH and finishing Cane River Gap TH
How: Following Black Mountain Crest, Mountains-to-Sea and Big Butt Trails as well as optional SB6K (off-trail and unmarked) ascent routes linking the ten 6,000+’ peaks of the Black Mountain Crest.

Aid: None planned. However, there is a concession stand and restaurant halfway along the route operated by the state park, which should be open.

Sunrise caught from Horse Rock along the Crest Trail

WARNING: This is an extremely rugged route. Fit and experienced trekkers should expect this traverse to take upwards of ten hours. Read a 2009 account and view this album to see photos and to get a better idea.

Interested? Logistics for this unofficial insanity below:
  • Camping: We will plan on camping the night before at Cane River Gap to make an easy shuttle down to Bowlens Creek in the morning
  • Start Time: 6:00am (got to catch that sunrise from Horse Rock). We will leave Cane River Gap at approximately 5:30 so meet there if not camping to have your car at the finish
  • Lunch: Bring some cash as we plan on eating an early light lunch midway through the run at the Mt Mitchell Restaurant. This also allows us all to reconvene for the SB6K route shortly after leaving the restaurant.
